Don’t know how to Mow?

When you’re aiming for the perfect Salt Lake City lawn, knowing when to start mowing can be a worry. If you mow too early you might ruin the grass before it’s even started growing.

Sometimes it can feel like you don’t have enough time in your schedule for lawn maintenance but having a beautiful lawn doesn’t take a lot of time, if you mow and maintain in the right way.

Read on for our essential mowing tips and tricks you didn’t know you needed.

When should you start mowing?

If you’re aiming for a gorgeous lawn, it is essential that you start mowing at the right time. Mow too early and you could damage the grass. Mow too late and you might not reach full growth potential.

You should mow your lawn in the spring before your grass turns green and starts growing. As with any plant, removing the old, dead tips makes way for new, stronger growth.

How often should you mow?

Knowing how often to cut your lawn is important. You don’t want to cut the grass too often, just because it was mowed over a week ago, does not mean it needs mowing again.

All lawns grow at different paces, depending on the type of grass you have, how often you water your lawn, and the kind of weather you are experiencing.

You might find that the lawn only needs cutting once every ten days so don’t mow just for the sake of it.

Ideally you want to be cutting only one third of the grass blade, the aim is to always mow as high as possible to encourage deep root growth which will give you a luscious, green lawn.

Let it grow, let it grow, let it grow

To have a strong, resilient lawn your grass needs to have deep root growth. If your lawn has a deep root system, it will be more drought resistant and will be less prone to weeds.

Tests have shown lawns that are between 2 ½ and 3 inches long have stronger root systems and less weeds, so let your lawn grow before you mow.

The only time you need to cut the grass short, is for the final cut of the year. Cutting it low over the winter reduces the chances of matting and the lawn dying in the colder months.

Check your mower blades

Always check your mower blades! For your lawn to have the best growth and the cleanest cuts, the blades need to be sharp. Dull blades damage the grass and tear at the lawn rather than cutting it cleanly.\

Don’t mow when it’s wet

Do not mow the lawn when it’s wet. When the grass is wet you will not get a proper cut. You cannot accurately gauge the length, and this may leave your lawn with damaged roots and ruts in the ground.

Leave the mowing until everything is dry. Your grass will be stronger, and the cut will be more accurate.

Do you need to clean the clippings?

If your lawn is healthy you can leave the grass clippings where they fall if there’s not too many of them. The clippings break down quickly and provide your lawn with much needed nitrogen.

If, however, your lawn has problems with thatch you should clear up the clippings. A layer of thatch is not harmful to your lawn, but it can delay your lawns growth if it gets too thick.

There you have it. Surprisingly simple!

We do know that even with an easy guide, you might not have the time to stay on top of your lawn. Life is busy and lawn maintenance isn’t always at the top of your agenda.
